    Silver Bay Seafoods, a well-established Alaska based seafood company has an opening for an experienced Facility Mechanic at our new state of the art processing facility in False Pass, AK in 2019. Our False Pass location will process salmon as well as white fish and will begin operations during the 2019 salmon season. Silver Bay Seafoods will provide lodging and meals at no charge as well as round trip transportation to the site. The location is remote and the hours will be long. The incumbent can expect to work 12-16 hours a day and 6-7 days a week while at the facility.


    The Facility Mechanic is responsible for operating and maintaining machinery and mechanical equipment such as engines, motors, pneumatic tools, conveyor systems, gearboxes, hydraulic systems, and production equipment by use of hand and power tools. The incumbent leads and sets an example for the department staff in work ethic, knowledge, experience, safety and attitude by working efficiently to maintain a high level of production for the seafood processing facility.


    • Timely and regular attendance.
    • Observes all mechanical devices in operations and regularly watches and listens to locate causes of trouble within the assigned facility.
    • Dismantles devices to gain access and remove defective parts, reassembles with new replacement part.
    • Advanced knowledge and experience troubleshooting, repairing and building hydraulic and pneumatic system components.
    • Exceptional knowledge of troubleshooting, building and repairing conveyors.
    • Intermediate to advanced knowledge and experience of weld and fabricating aluminum or stainless.
    • Examines form and texture of parts to detect imperfections.
    • Inspects used parts to determine changes in dimensional requirements using micrometers, calipers, and gauges.
    • Repairs and replaces defective parts. Lubricates and cleans parts, equipment and machinery. Installs special functional and structural parts in devices.
    • Tests and adjust factory equipment to meet performance specifications.
    • Sets up and operates lathe, drill press, grinder, saws, and other metal-working tools to make and repair parts.
    • Maintains inventory and initiates purchase order for parts and machines.
    • May participate and train with First Responder HazMat team.
    • Work in a safe manner and acts to correct or report safety hazards to Safety Manager or Chief Engineer.
    • Recognize operator errors and correct their behavior in a constructive manner.
    • Other duties as assigned.




    High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred but not required.

    Minimum 2-4 years’ experience in multiple mechanical skills, including knowledge of millwright, hydraulic, pneumatic, plumbing, building maintenance, fabricating and welding processes. Basic mechanical knowledge in food industry preferred, experience in seafood industry is a plus.




    The Facility Mechanic possesses a wide and advanced knowledge of several mechanical skills regarding seafood processing equipment such as food grade conveyors (plastic and stainless), processing pumps (meat and water), and grinders. Ability to operate a variety of hand tools to include the following: welding machines, cutting torches, and power tools including but not limited to: pipe or tube cutters, power drills, power saws, pullers, wrenches, screw drivers, sockets, ratchets, grinders, pry bars, hammers, punches, measuring devices, and chisels.

    Employee is experienced in easily adapting to a wide variety of tasks assigned to them. The incumbent takes quick action, exercises independent decision making and resolution of mechanical malfunctions in a rigorous seafood environment while regularly instructing other maintenance workers. They are willing to follow directions and carry out duties with a sense of urgency and keen attention to detail.

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume; and able to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.


    Physical Demands:


    Employee must be 18 years or older and be authorized to legally work in the United States.


    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.


    Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.


    Mental Activities:


    The employee needs the ability to multitask in a high demand environment within the factory. Focus and concentration maintenance and troubleshooting of mechanical equipment related to seafood processing. The employee needs to regularly demonstrate attention to detail when maintaining all equipment within the facility. In addition, the incumbent must possess a keen sense of the importance of punctuality for a variety of designated tasks by demonstrating a sound work ethic. The employee has an eagerness to teach and learn and the desire to do quality work.


    Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:


    The Facility Mechanic position requires driven machinery certifications such as a forklift, expeditor truck, or flatbed truck which in turn requires a valid driver’s license.


    Work Environment:


    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts.  The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and extreme cold.  The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock and vibration.  The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
